DirectX 12 To Come Pre-installed In Microsoft’s Windows 10
Microsoft’s DirectX (DX) is a group of APIs which handle tasks associated with multimedia like games and videos on MS platforms such as Windows. Windows 8.1, which is the latest OS available with the common man, runs on DX 11. Microsoft had announced last year that they will bring out DX 12 in 2015 but nothing about it was mentioned in the #-Link-Snipped-# by MS when they revealed the details about the features of Windows 10. However, if you are using the technical preview of Windows 10, you can go ahead and run dxdiag.exe and can see at the foot of the Systems tab that it is running on DX 12.
MS is not willing to divulge much details about DX 12. The only statement they gave was that it will improve frame rate and will make an efficient use of power. It is just a speculation but it is possible that with improved frame rates, MS is referring to sharing of threads unlike the individual dependency of thread in DX 11. Splitting them up would mean better frame rates. The improved threading can also mean that the overhead will be shared by the CPU and GPU both which can increase frame rates as much as 60 percent.

Although DX 12 is present in Windows 10, it however cannot be used right now. It is because there are no drivers available that can access Microsoft’s graphics enhancing API. No big players like Nvidia or AMD have yet released drivers that can support DX 12. Plus, it doesn’t have backward compatibility. It means that the user should not expect that the games they played on earlier DX version will show better graphics with DX 12. A game needs to intrinsically work with DX 12 and right now there are no such games available.
MS hasn’t revealed whether a separate hardware needs to be bought in order to work with DX 12. They have however assured that more details about the same will be disclosed in the upcoming Game Developers Conference (GDC) in March so it is fair to assume that big players that Nvidia, Intel, AMD etc. will unveil their DX 12 drivers at the same. Meanwhile there are plenty of features of Windows 10 that can be explored.
