Determining the charge content of a battery

Consider that you have a lead acid battery, (the ones used in automobiles). how do you determine whether the battery is fully charged, or partially charged or completely empty.

any ideas ?

Measuring the potential difference between the two terminals is one way

I am not so sure of that .

if you connected the two ends of a battery to a voltmeter or a multimeter, then the instrument readings might only tell the maximum voltage of the battery.

would it tell the exact amount of charge that is present in the battery at the moment ?

The Voltage of the battery is a measure of the charge stored in the battery So if we have maximum voltage the battery is full charged and if we have 0 or comparatively lesser voltage the battery is dead
