Using bicycles instead of fuel-burning vehicles is the idea of green to a common man living in a densely populated or a massively polluted city. But when you start out to take that concept further, you open up the arena for the greener and the better. And Izhar Gafni, an Israeli Inventor who is a cycling enthusiast has done just that. He has created a ready-for-production 'Cardboard Bicycle' out of his garden shed. Now, a cardboard has a lot of weak structural points. To make a durable and strong bicycle out of it must've been a heftily difficult task. And Gafni's goal was to use no metal parts at all - He is using all recycled materials to create either the brake mechanism or the pedal bearings and even the wheels. Just how awesome is that!
Now, this is no usual cardboard. Made out of wood pulp, it is cut into the required shapes and to make it water & fireproof, it is treated with a secret concoction made of organic materials, only to be coated with lacquer paint for those good looks in the end. Gafni says, "I'm repeatedly surprised at just how strong this material is, it is amazing."

Weighing about 9 kgs, this bicycle is not just light on weight but on cost too - You will have to pay around $20 to buy one for yourself. If the bike fails to amaze you still, your mind will be blown away to know that this bike needs no maintenance and no adjustment. Its tires need no inflating and will last for 10 years. And even if it fails to last that long, you can just take it to the factory and recycle it. Impressive. We are in love with the concept already and would love to buy and try one right away!
