BURST Code Simulation Provides Key Breakthrough In Understanding The Primordial Universe

The current approach in fundamental scientific research encompasses three distinct aspects, namely theory, experiment and simulation. From cosmology to archaeology, these three aspects are imperative to produce quality research. Moreover, interdisciplinary studies are magnifying the scopes and when combined with the aforementioned aspects, a scientific project bears fruit. Though specific genres deserve unique attention, most of the time, departments engage in collaborative work.

A recent research paper from the Los Alamos National Laboratory talks about a simulation code named as BURST code which is the output generated on the basis of the fields of Nuclear Physics, Particle Physics and Cosmology. The beauty of the code lies in its massive result which it has unearthed concerning the state of the early universe. It simulates or rather enacts the condition of the new born universe and to create a self-sustaining environment.

Practically, physicists are now divided in two parts among which one supports the Big Bang Thoery and another which goes against it. It is still not clear how far this simulation data will provide nourishment to the already existing or emerging theories. The corresponding group clearly mentioned that the code highlights the importance of neutrinos, nuclei and other particles in the early universe. Scientist Mark Paris from Los Alamos claimed that their team with another group from UC, San Diego has collected data from high precision telescopes which helped to mimic the early universe and transformed that environment into a customizable and controllable experimental base.

Further confirmation came from Paris regarding the microscopic and quantum nature of fundamental particles in neutrino cosmology. George Fuller from the UC, San Diego explained that the general approach to cosmological evolution is done using particle colliders such as the Large Hadron Collider, but this simulation method incorporates every particle which precisely defines a flexible early universe-like environment.

The Big Bang theory suggests that after few minutes of its occurrence, the world was densely packed with innumerable subatomic particles with the temperature being 10 billion degree Celsius. In that very instant, the universe expanded very fast and the temperature decreased due to “symmetry breaking”, vaguely a special type of interaction among particles. This process produced light nuclei such as Hydrogen and Helium which is now tagged as the basic elements of star formation. Unimaginably, the whole incident took place only in 3 minutes.

Scientists believe that these light nuclei were significantly depended on nuclei and its’ another variant “sterile” neutrinos. According to Evan Grohs from UC,San Diego, this computational method will eventually discover less understood areas of physics. Neutrinos are the second most abundant particle available in space after photons, but it needs to be well comprehended before jumping to any conclusion. A prototype version of space would be of some help to the team, for which they have indirectly fabricated using the code. This research work has already accepted as a paper by the Physics Letters D journal and will be published in late April, 2016.
