Biometric ATM installed in Poland

The BPS SA ban in Warsaw, Poland became the first bank in the world to offer easy money withdrawal through fingerprint scanning. The ATM allows customers to withdraw money by using their fingerprints instead of cards and PIN number to withdraw money.

"Our bank is the first in Europe to provide its clients with a new means to secure transactions to complement the secret code of their banking card," BPS SA Bank vice-president Krzysztof Jagielski told reporters Tuesday.

The ATM uses new 'Finger Vein' technology developed by Japanese tech giant Hitachi. The ATM machine which scans the unique network of minute veins in fingertips was developed by Wincor Nixdorf, a leading IT provider for retailers and retail banking.

The 'Finger Vein' technology enables the scanner to scan for number of veins that run through the fingers and identify the customers uniquely. The company plans to install 3-4 such machines by year end in the capital of Poland.
