  • Artificial Island That Shall 'Maintain Its Distance' From Sea Level

As the climatic changes directly affect the sea level, it's a safe bet for people living in low-lying areas to consider artificially floating islands. The past has witnessed engineers using sand and rubbles to create an entirely different island, but that has resulted in sea and seafloor disturbances, thus affecting the ecosystem negatively.

Maldives, with its 1,192 islands spread out in the Indian Ocean, has an average elevation of just 5 feet, which is the lowest in the world. As compared to 1990, sea level has risen by 7 inches, and predictably may go up by another 2 feet by 2100, washing away a sizeable population (over 390,000) out their homes. As a solution to this issue, the Maldivian government has joined hands with Dutch Docklands International for the world's largest artificial floating-island building project, which will always stay above water  regardless of the number of melted glaciers. The design disturbs the seabed quiet negligibly. The company already has a reputation for anchoring floating islands for prisons and housing from concrete slabs of polystyrene and concrete in Netherlands.
