Amazon Smartphone Release On The Cards, Reports Bloomberg

If sources at Bloomberg are to be believed, Amazon has a smartphone release under wing, and is currently working on the development of the device which it aims to pitch against the likes of Google's Android and Apple's iPhone.

Though, the report does not reveal much, it is reported that Amazon is planning to acquire patents that cover wireless technology to avoid any future allegations of infringement. Amazon is already benefiting from the popularity of the Kindle tablet and also currently owns an Android app store, which houses a collection of apps for the Kindle Fire with a dedicated number of apps for devices from other manufacturers. This works in favor of the rumored smartphone as availability of content is an appreciated attribute, and assures a recurring revenue.

Amazon was responsible for manufacturing its own hardware during its previous venture, that was the Kindle fire tablet. With Kindle and Kindle Fire, Amazon has proven its prowess in hardware and is likely to profit from the same. Another point of speculation is the software; while the Kindle tablet ran Android, its software was heavily customized. A similar move might be implemented in the case of the smartphone too.

Amazon is no newbie and has sold a lot of phones, but only time will tell how successfully will it be able to sell a smartphone of its own.
