Xiaomi Mi 5 Launched At MWC 2016: Snapdragon 820, Fingerprint Sensor & Android Marshmallow

Xiaomi took the centre stage at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona to unveil their newest flagship smartphone, the Mi 5. The Mi 5 is a significant improvement of the Mi 4 both in terms of looks and features. When it comes to looks, the Mi 5 has ultra-thin bezels on the sides. The rear of the smartphone is built out of high-grade nano-ceramic zirconia which is durable and resists any kind of abrasion up to 8H on the Mohs hardness scale. The Xiaomi Mi 5 has 3D glass on the front that slides seamlessly on the sides and results in easier grip. The Xiaomi Mi 5 with all these lavish materials weighs just 129 grams. The Xiaomi Mi 5 is also the first smartphone from the company to feature a front fingerprint sensor.

The Xiaomi Mi 5 sports a 5.15-inch 16 LED light display with a full HD resolution. Underneath the hood we find a Snapdragon 820 chipset that houses a 64-bit 2.2 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Kryo CPU, Adreno 530 GPU and up to 4GB of RAM. The internal storage variants start at 32GB and go up to 128GB and since Hugo Barra abhors microSD cards you won’t find one on the Xiaomi Mi 5. Xiaomi has improved the photography department on the Mi 5 by adding a 16MP 4-axis OIS (Optical Image Stabilisation) sensor on the rear and a rather underwhelming 4MP sensor on the front. We expected a bigger sensor on the front. The Mi 5 features NFC and VoLTE (Voice over LTE) support. The Xiaomi Mi 5 is powered by a 3000mAh battery which is supported by Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 technology. When it comes to benchmark tests, Xiaomi claims that the phone has achieved a score of 142,084 on AnTuTu. The Xiaomi Mi 5 runs MIUI based on Android Marshmallow.

The Xiaomi Mi 5 will be sold in black, white, and gold colour variants at prices starting at $262 (17,960 INR) for the 32GB variant and go up to $354 (24,266 INR) for the 128GB variant from March 1st. The smartphone will be sold in China followed by India and then in other markets.
