    Why a single point cutting tool is called so even though it is having cutting edge rather than a point?

    You just carefully watch the operation using single point cutting tool.
    In single point cutting tool, only the tip of the tool is used for cutting. while grinding the tool, the edges also get sharpness, but the edges are not used for cutting.

    Then why there is cutting edges?(principal and auxiliary cutting edges)
    In case of drills it's not the chisel which is cutting, it is lips! Still called point!

    For this fig, not only the point is used for cutting, but also the edges.
    And here the point refers to the tip of the drill bit not the cutting edge. It may be the nomenclature. For slotting operation, the tool has two cutting point and cutting edge. this tool cannot be called as single point cutting tool.

    And here the point refers to the tip of the drill bit not the cutting edge. It may be the nomenclature. For slotting operation, the tool has two cutting point and cutting edge. this tool cannot be called as single point cutting tool.
    Can you suggest me a reference for this for a detailed study.

    In the early days of mech engineering many terms were loosely used. As Tamilazhagan says above it is more a convention than actual engineering definition.
