VNIT Develops Supercomputer To Simulate Nano Materials
The Department of Electronics Engineering of Vishvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) has designed a supercomputer that shall apparently be employed to transmit simulations to nano materials/devices. While the supercomputer was built up two years ago, it has come of use just lately, when other departments like material sciences, physics and chemistry started working on it.

The supercomputer was built under a project financed by the Department Of Information Technology, Government Of India. The setup involves 128 CPUs with 24gb memory linked parallely. A nano material is developed owing to the simulation from the computer, which is then fabricated at IIT Mumbai. On account of the machine, the work that required a month to complete, now requires just 2-3 days to finish. One of the most efficient and purposeful application of this supercomputer would be drug testing, using the 'in-silico' simulation.
Users claim it to be an essential facility estimated around INR 5,00,000. This research also aims to improve the holding memory or USB storage instrument like pen-drives, cameras, mobile etc, in a project spanning three years. Plans to develop more effective photovoltaic cells using the simulation is being seriously considered, according to a researcher. The other applications of this supercomputer include detection of cancer and to aid in solving problems of physics chemistry etc.
