VIT Pune Students Win SAE Aero Design West 2011 Award

Vishwakarma Institute Of Technology (VIT) Pune's Varun Garg (3rd Year Mechanical) & Parsha Sarwate (Final Year, Chemical) have bagged Society Of Automotive Engineer's (SAE) International Aero Design West 2011 Award held in Texas, USA. The event was organized and hosted by leading engineering company Lockheed Martin. The team designed an RC Micro Aircraft that withstood all the evaluation parameters of the contest. The design won them first place in 'Operational Availability' and third place for lifting of highest payload. #-Link-Snipped-#

The competition witnessed 58 teams from leading technology Universities across the world. The competition simulated real world problems and challenges engineers face. The participating team first had to submit the designs on paper, followed by presentation of the design and two days of actual flights that tested various aspects of their designs.

The aircraft designed by VIT students had wing span of 53", fuselage of 30.4" and used a two battery system as the main power source. The craft was designed using lightweight balsa wood and carbon fiber. The craft weighs 800 grams and capable of lifting 1750 grams.
