you search for "variable valve actuation" in google. A lot of information is available. If u could understand the valve timing diagrams and its basics,you can easily work with the mechanism to improve the efficiency of the engine.

if you study and follow the technologies the companies have been using you will be able to to do a presentation and make some comparisons with the benefits and the area where a particular technology lacks.( BMW's valvetronic, hondas VTEC etc.).
