UNA Toolbox Helps In Superior Town Planning

Looking back at the ancient civilizations, we often come across their superior town planning. We many times wonder about their superior architectural skills even in those technology low days. Today although most of the cities have been designed to sustain ever rowing population and increasing city traffic still it is a growing cause of concern for many. Taking into account the responsibility of architects who face numerous difficulties in designing a sustainable city model MIT researchers have developed software called Urban Network Analysis Toolbox (UNA). It is a real world counterpart of the network analysis tools of popular social networking sites like #-Link-Snipped-# and #-Link-Snipped-#.

The Urban Network Analysis Toolbox provides the city planners to easily quantify complex spatial centrality measures for streets and housing/ commercial complexes in a particular city. Hence a user can have a clear idea as to how many units of construction can a passerby reach in a walking distance means Reach and its converse Betweenness which implies how many people can have an access to a particular building or a constructed unit. The other types of graph analysis which a town planner can do now are Gravity, Straightness and Closeness.

The working of UNA involves three basic features. The first one includes analysis of distances and comparing shorter and larger links. Secondly the software tool works with two elements Nodes and Edges and lastly usage of buildings which also acts as pivot for spatial analysis. With these modern features you will be able to answer many of the fundamental questions like the possibility of most population being located, which is the most populated building? How fast can average individual access basic amenities? And so on.

The City Form Research Group who designed this software has made it available as an open-source plug-in for ArcGIS which can be Urban Network Analysis Toolbox for ArcGIS — City Form Lab. Now can you solve Euler's famous Königsberg's seven bridges puzzle with this tool?
