Ever had a picture or video shot where you focused something or someone you didn’t want to? Well, we all have, and Toshiba is working on a new camera module which would give smartphone and tablet users to adjust and change the focus after they have been shot.

Sounds too good to be true, but reports from Japan confirm that the tiny module being made, measures about 1mm on each side which holds about 500,000 lenses of 0.03mm layered onto the 5mm x 7mm sensor.

Toshiba has developed software, allowing the users to shift the focus on the clicked image by each of the lenses which capture different images individually. The sensor accurately measures the distance between objects, focusing on the near and far ones.

This technology seems pretty close to the Lytro Light Field Camera from last year, which was quite big but the Toshiba module would be small enough to fit into a smartphone or a tablet. Lytro technology only could refocus images, but this module has an advantage and would be able to refocus videos also. This technology would be commercialized in 2013, with Toshiba aiming the smartphone and tablet industry.
