Japanese engineers have accelerated their research and development activities to tackle the emergency situations like those after the tsunami & earthquake in March 2011. While Japan is a world leader in robotics, none of the then-existing robots could be deployed at the critical locations. TOSHIBA has developed a quadruped robot to be the human substitute at such locations - ideal for search and rescue operations. Equipped with advance sensors and some modern hydraulics, the robot can detect and avoid obstacles, climb stairs and even access areas that can't normally be reached by wheeled robots or crawlers.
