The first war started between the warriors of Microsoft and IBM and their weapons were operating system and various web services(if i am wrong please do tell me)

    1980
Nov 1980 - Now, let's enter a time machine and look at Microsoft's history memorabilia. The most sophisticated transactions in November 1980, Microsoft and IBM signed a contract for the then still secret, is scheduled to launch next year the operating system IBM PC development. This operating system was later named the PC-DOS, Microsoft MS-DOS was based on the packaging is made of

    1981
1981 - In 1981, Microsoft developed its first major operating system, PC-DOS for IBM (MS-DOS for the Microsoft version). Microsoft actually did not have sufficient experience or time to develop this product on its own. So it licensed 86-DOS from Seattle Computer to form the core for PC-DOS. IBM originally approached Microsoft only to develop languages such as BASIC, FORTRAN, and COBOL for the new IBM computer.

    1985
Aug 1985 - In August 1985, Microsoft and IBM signed a deal to partner in the development of an advanced operating system called OS/2. The operating system never achieved the widespread popularity of DOS -- or, later on, Windows -- and became a bone of contention between Microsoft and IBM. Microsoft devoted most of its development resources to Windows and Windows NT, rather than OS/2, and ultimately abandoned OS/2 to IBM, which eventually abandoned it as well

    1987
Jun 11, 1987 - The stocks of Microsoft Inc. and International Business Machines Corp. were buffeted Wednesday as rumors swept Wall Street that there would be delays in the operating system for IBM's new line of personal computers. Both companies strongly denied rumors about delays and poor response...

IBM's seeds of destruction are sown!

By now IBM was the dominant force in Mainframes but was irked by the inroads these micros were making in the terminal market. IBM decided that if you cant beat ‘em join ‘em. They created a task force and came up with a plan. Intel was to supply the 8086 processor Chipset. They looked for operating system software. They liked C-Dos by Gary Kildall of Digital Research but he apparently went sailing on his Yacht, leaving his wife acting on his behalf. She refused to sign a non-disclosure agreement. They then went to see a fellow named Bill Gates, Gates, who was instrumental in the development of the Basic programming language, claimed to have an operating system called Dos. He hit on a royalty model where he would paid a small percentage by IBM for each operating system installed on IBM PC's.

There is an ocean under the bridge
IBM just plain never got over how when it asked MS to dig its own grave by developing OS/2, MS managed to turn things around and not only remained the OS provider for the PC with Windows: MS managed to outright steal the PC market right from under IBM?s nose. Also, the fact that no matter what IBM and others seem to throw at MS, MS manages to adapt and keep on going, only adds to IBM?s irritation with MS.

IBM?s latest major effort at turning OSS against MS (which should have been a doozie) has all but failed, as OSS? is now losing its appeal over Windows. There really is no business advantage now to using Linux over Windows. Windows is more reliable, more secure, easier to use, easier and better to develop applications for, has better TCO, etc. In addition to all of this, .Net has managed to knock the wind out Java, and MS is now charging IBM?s Websphere development ecosystem with every intention of knocking it down. It is of little surprise then to find IBM resorting to its most effective method to date of causing pain for MS: making more antitrust trouble for the software giant.

The next war which was a much bigger one and is still going on, This time the warriors were Microsoft and Apple . They fought with every weapons(products) they had on almost every platform.

The war begun with weapons of operating systems Microsoft had Windows were as Apple had Macintosh

i found this article in wikipedia....

Apple Computer, Inc. v. Microsoft Corporation, 35 F.3d 1435 (9th Cir. 1994) was a copyright infringement lawsuit in which Apple Computer, Inc. (now Apple Inc.) sought to prevent Microsoft Corporation and Hewlett-Packard from using visual graphical user interface (GUI) elements that were similar to those in Apple's Lisa and Macintosh operating systems. The court ruled that, "Apple cannot get patent-like protection for the idea of a graphical user interface, or the idea of a desktop metaphor [under copyright law]..." In the midst of the Apple v. Microsoft lawsuit, Xerox also sued Apple alleging that Mac's GUI was heavily based on Xerox's. The district court dismissed Xerox's claims without addressing whether Apple's GUI infringed Xerox's. Apple lost all claims in the Microsoft suit except for the ruling that the trash can icon and file folder icons from Hewlett-Packard's NewWave windows application were infringing. The lawsuit was filed in 1988 and lasted four years; the decision was affirmed on appeal in 1994, and Apple's appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court was denied.

And in this war Microsoft's Windows won against Apple Mac.

The business strategies of Microsoft was much stronger than Apple.
One of the important point of the success was its tie up wit HP which helped it to take control over the market

THe next war was between google and microsoft

In Google's first decade online, Google and Microsoft didn't seem to be the kind of companies that would compete directly with each other. Google's main product is an Internet search engine and the company's revenue comes from ad sales. Microsoft's main products are an operating system, office productivity suite and other software. Where's the conflict?

Today, there are several points where Microsoft and Google cross paths. The two have taken each other on in their native product categories, and expanded into new markets as well.

Microsoft's direct competitor attempt is a search engine called Bing. Microsoft launched Bing in 2009 as a step above its Live Search and MSN search engines. Its features are similar in look, feel, and function to Google's search. It hasn't boomed in the marketplace yet, though: As of February 2010, Nielsen reported that Microsoft search engines (Bing, Live Search, and MSN) all shared a mere 12.5 percent of online searches, nowhere near Google's whopping 65 percent [source: Nielsen]. It's still not close, even if you add in Microsoft's new 10-year search engine partner Yahoo, at 14 percent.

Google has made an attempt to compete with Microsoft's Office software suite with its Web-based productivity software called Google Docs. Google Docs includes a word processor, spreadsheet application, slideshow presentation maker, and even a form builder and drawing tools, all with the portability of access from any Web browser. It also makes it easy to collaborate with others on a project, with the ability for both users to edit the same document, even at the same time. Google Docs is not as robust and feature-rich as Microsoft Office software, though, and depends on Google for privacy and availability.

Microsoft fired back at Google with Office Live Workspace (OLW), free online collaboration versions of its Microsoft Office products. OLW readily works with files in proprietary Microsoft Office formats for documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. Plus, the SkyDrive gives you 25 GB of space in which to store files [source: Microsoft]. But Microsoft didn't just put OLW together overnight; it leveraged the power of its well-established (though costly) SharePoint software to create the new free Web service [source: Foley].
