Since the news has broken, Symantec has acknowledged the problem and even issued#-Link-Snipped-#. The problem seems to be specifically effecting the XP machines with the latest version of the SONAR technology, the July 11th rev11 SONAR signature set, and certain third party software. The #-Link-Snipped-# as three way interaction between some third party software that implements a file system driver using kernel stack based file objects, the SONAR signature and the Windows XP Cache manager, leading to an incompatibility which resulted in a system crash.

However, the customers haven't been too happy with Symantec's way of handling the bug. Most users report a lack of quality control at the part of Symantec and a poor customer support. The update in question, is a part of a security package commonly used in corporate environments. This caused a number of companies trouble, due to their computers failing and in order to prevent the update, rendered most without protection.
