suspension and rear axle interfacing

In cars with rear wheel drive, and where the engine is located exactly above the rear axle and thus eliminating the need for a propeller shaft, how is the gearbox coupled to the rear axle so as to allow the rear axle to vibrate , whenever the leafspring vibrates so that the coupling is not disturbed in anyway ?
