Surge arrestors are circuits which cuts of the excess current spikes which are generated in transients from moving into other portion of the circuit

Surge arrestors prevent current spikes to move to other portion of the circuit and by pass it to ground. For extra info do read this <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surge_arrester" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Surge Arrester</a>
