Solar Simulators - Create Artificial Sunlight

I stumbled upon an interesting concept called 'Solar Simulators' aka the electric lamp that'd simulate the sunlight. I got some more information here: Solar Simulator , but now looking for some more information from those who've actually built one or have used it.

How does the thing work?

In the early 70s Russians did some work on collecting actual solar light and piping it down to where required, using fibre optic cables. Looks as though this is now advanced quite a bit.
