Project Abstract / Summary : In this system, we are using human gesture of movement like hands movement and then synchronize them with movement of wheelchair so that they can use it with comfort and ease. Here we are designing the gesture based system which controls the wheelchair using hand movement.

The system is divided into two main unit accelerometer and wheelchair. The wheelchair is control using wired accelerometer developed using various IC’s and components. The sensor which is connected to hand is 3 axis accelerometer with digital output that provides hand gesture movement and gives this output to controller and hence by controller wheelchair move forward ,backward and takes a turn to right and left. Along with that system can detect obstacles and avoid accidents. So the wheelchair is designed for physically handicapped people so that they control their chair themselves.

Why did you choose to work on this project topic : In today’s lifetime, approximately 1% of the world’s population needs wheelchair, who cannot walk due to physical illness, paralysis or any disability. Traditional wheelchairs have some limitations in context to flexibility, bulkiness and limited functions. To make comfortable wheelchair for such physically disabled people, we are designing a system called “Smart wheelchair” which moves by the human gestures. The Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) sensor, which is connected to hand, is a 3-axis accelerometer, with digital output that provides hand gesture detection and gives it to the PIC controller.

I think you can choose the accelerometer of smartphone instead of 3 axis accelerometer. By doing so, you can reduce the cost of wheelchair.
