Samsung Power Sleep App Donates Smartphone's Processor Power For Cancer & Alzheimer's Research

A new app on Android called 'Samsung Power Sleep' brings in the concept of making good use of your smartphone or tablet's processing power for research work. Like the folks behind the app say, "Doing good has never been easier", with the app installed on your Android device, while you sleep at night the app will let you donate the gadget's processor power to help University of Vienna researchers in decryption of protein sequences which are in-turn used to benefit cancer and Alzheimer's research amongst others. The Power Sleep app makes use of BOINC, a technology for distributed computing and requests a data package from the SIMAP server (Similarity Matrix of Proteins) at the University and starts calculating. When your alarm rings in the morning, the process ends and the package is recorded in the SIMAP database. Thus, making it possible for you to literally make the best use of the power of your smartphone.

For the smooth functioning of this app, you have to connect your smartphone to a charger and turn on the WiFi network. The app transfer 1 MB of data per package for download and about half the size for upload. The estimated duration for the calculation takes between 30 minutes and 1 hour per data package. This means that the longer you sleep, the more data packages can be calculated. You may however be assured that all the normal functions of your smartphone or tablet will be working just fine when the Power Sleep app is at work.

Now, SIMAP contains about all currently published protein sequences and is continuously updated. In BOINCSIMAP, they calculate the similarities of newly imported proteins. All data from SIMAP are freely available. Individual researchers use the SIMAP database via the public #-Link-Snipped-#, e.g. to investigate the evolution and function of individual proteins. Furthermore, many bioinformatics projects access SIMAP directly via the public #-Link-Snipped-# or #-Link-Snipped-# facilities.

If your Android OS version is 2.3 or above and your device runs on any processor ARM onwards, you should be able to download and install the Power Sleep app. Those concerned about the safety can bank on the fact that Samsung and the University of Vienna have declared that tehy do not collect any of your personal data. They have mentioned it on the website that the processor power is used solely for the benefit of scientific research. Therefore, those interested in contributing to the research can download the app from #-Link-Snipped-#. To get more information on this through this introductory video -
