It was only last year that Samsung launched its first smartwatch with original Galaxy Gear running on Android. Fast forward to - November 2013, the company claimed that it had #-Link-Snipped-# of its watch and a XDA forum developer had given the gear its first functional ROM. Six months after the official launch of that gadget, the company revealed Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 running on Samsung's native Samsung's Galaxy Gear 2.0 To Run On Tizen just ahead of MWC 2014. A lot of people from the early adopter community looked offended that they did not wait another few months for the arrival of Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 as well Gear Fit and Gear 2 Neo. Since the underlying software was the only major change in the two versions of the smartwatch, a lot of people were waiting for a Tizen update to arrive on the original Galaxy Gear. And guess what, here it is!
Folks over at Exclusive: Samsung Galaxy Gear Tizen Preview - SamMobile - SamMobile have shared a preview of the recent Tizen test build that they got their hands on. [Check video at the bottom]. Presently, there's no word from the company about the official Tizen update roll out for the Samsung Galaxy Gear, but rest assured that you have a bunch of new features to look forward to.
First among the lot of new features in the Tizen upgrade is that the Galaxy Gear now brings 'Sleep Mode' which makes it able to measure sleep patterns. Another feature is the 'Exercise mode' that can help you keep track of your workouts in real time. With Android OS at play, the Galaxy Gear could track footsteps of the wearer using the Pedometer it featured. Thanks to the newly incorporated "standalone music player", Samsung Galaxy Gear can now store music on the smartwatch itself.
In another feature Samsung now lets user customize the double tap shortcut and set it to the application of his/her choice. With Android, user was able to double tap shortcut to quick controls to manage the display brightness and sound volume. In the Tizen update, users have a new Controls app that can be accessed via shortcut, as well as the facility to choose from various font styles, wallpapers and home icon sizes. The Samsung folks also let you connect the gadget to a bluetooth headset and set privacy lock. Samsung has also introduced voice commands in the camera app.
This means that almost every important feature (barring WatchON Remote and Heart Rate monitor) from the Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo is now present with the Samsung Galaxy Gear Tizen update. Do take a look at the following video to see the Tizen update in action -
