RubberBand App Saves Children From Getting Lost; Alerts You At The Right Time

Smartphone App called RuberBand is a saviour in case of school trips where a single teacher has to look after a number of mischievous kids. The app is designed to alert the teacher in case any of the students tries to escape the area in vicinity. The technique uses sensors attached to every student's backpack, each of which broadcasts a radio signal to all other sensors every second. Signals are then received by this smartphone app which determines signal strength between every two sensors to calculate relative distance between students.

If the distance between every student is optimum, then the situation remains same - a radio signal is broadcasted every second which is captured by the app. But in case a kid (or a group of kids) leaves the area crowded by his friends, the app receives a diminished signal strength associated with the kid. As a result, the system plays a sound to alert teacher and displays pictures of the escaping child. The system will be presented at UbiComp conference, Pennsylvania in September.
