The Bangkok University is now developing robotic waiters that can take your order and deliver it to your table as part of the “MK Robot Project”.
MK Restaurants are about to shift hospitality services to a new level by "hiring" robotic waiters. In addition to this, the restaurant also looks forward to using radio frequency identification (RFID) tags that will record the likes and dislikes of customers regarding meals. This will prove to be time saving for the customers as well as the restaurant. The popular dishes will be thus available to tickle your taste buds even in the rush hours. This is not the first technological innovation at MK Restaurant, Thailand’s largest and most popular chains with more than 300 locations. They have already implemented GPS in their supply chain so human waiters already take customer orders on PDAs. This enhances their work ability and eliminates any chances of mistake in the orders or delivering the orders at the wrong table.

Prior to this project, MK Restaurants also had a robot called Din Sow in 2009. Din Sow was mainly intended to entertain customers. The new robotic waiter, however, will be much more useful. Yumbo will be able to carry dishes, store meals on a dish and deliver them to the customer without any risk. Just like the previous robot, Yumbo will navigate by following lines on the floor and will avoid collisions by making use of the ultrasonic range detection.
Rit Thirakomen, Managing Director, MK Restaurant says “We hope to get the robots to do some of the less ‘glamorous’ tasks that typically humans have to do, which tend to be quite repetitive, such as greeting customers with a sawadee ka, this will provide a strong sense of spirit and offer great entertainment.” The robot will thus be a great help to the restaurant owners and will entertain customers as well with their cute smile. Yumbo, after Din Sow is supposed to be a magnet for a lot of customers to the restaurant.
The practicality of the project will be known only after its implementation and the customers’ response but this lead by the MK Restaurants will definitely give a boom to the robotic market.
So people be ready to hear, “Anything for you ma’am” from Yumbo as he waits you.
