The patrol team in the South Korea Jail is being revamped. No itâs not an increase in the recruits or fresh training. Robotic Prison wardens are being introduced into the patrol team. Though it may not last for ever (it is being introduced for a trial period of 1 month), it may give an insight of how effective it is in detecting risky behavior such as violence and suicide. Three such robots are to be introduced in March and it will cost £554,000.
They hope that it will reduce the work load for the workers there. Prof Lee Baik-Chu, of Kyonggi University, who came up with this technique says the robots will notify the guards if any suspicious activity happens.
This sudden idea is the result of Koreaâs interest in rising to the position of world leader in Robotics and to compete with countries like Japan. Â Even the business people think it is a potential field that can be explored. The 1.5m high robot moves on four wheels and is equipped with cameras and sensors for the detection of and risky behavior.
The team which developed this Robot is from the Asian Forum for Corrections, specialists in criminality and prison policies. Now the Robots are almost ready and are being fine tuned. The country's Ministry of Knowledge Economy said that  £415m had been invested in the sector in the time gap of 2002 and 2010.
