Researchers Develop A Low Cost Iron Based Superconductor With Record Performace

Everything is made up of energy! And a lot of research is being done to develop new technologies to generate, store and deliver this energy. Superconductors have emerged as very promising candidates in energy delivery technologies as they are capable of transmitting current at a temperature of hundred degrees Celsius below zero. Though superconductors are not used widely because of high manufacturing cost and dampening effects of high magnetic fields. But researchers at U.S. Department of energy have found solutions to above problems. They have developed a new iron based superconductor which has a low manufacturing cost and record breaking performance.
Currently Cuprate (copper-oxide based superconductor) is the best performance superconductor we have. The new iron based superconductor is developed using iron, selenium and tellurium, which make it relatively inexpensive to manufacture. Moreover, it can be synthesized at half the temperature of Cuprate. One of the major advantages of this new superconductor is that it has a very high critical current density and critical temperature. Though, at -253 degrees Celsius, the critical temperature is still quite low, but it has got significant application potential, said Quiang Li, the leading physicist at Brookhaven Lab, who worked with Department of Energy to develop this superconductor.#-Link-Snipped-#
The new superconductor has shown promising results during testing. Under testing environment, it's critical density reached more than 1 million amperes per square centimeter. And under 30-tesla magnetic field, it was able to carry 200,000 amperes of current per square centimeter which is highest by any superconductor till now. While the team is working on improving the performance of the new superconductor, we all can hope for a sustain-ably powered future!
