Power Source For Stretchable Electronics Developed By University Of Delaware

Stretchable Electronics is relatively new concept and a lot of tech giants including Nokia, Sony etc. are working on it. One of the biggest issue in the development of Stretchable Electronics is the development of power source. Researchers at University Of Delware are working on the same and they have developed a running prototype of a power source which can be embedded in Stretchable Electronics devices.
According to Bingquin Wei, one of the researchers and a mechanical engineer professor at UD, “ Rechargeable and Stretchable energy storage devices, also known as supercapacitors, are urgently needed to complement advances currently being made in flexible electronics.” The group has made significant development in implementing stretchable power sources using carbon nanotube macrofilms, polyurethane membranes and organic electrolytes.

To test the performance of the power source the group tested the system's electrochemical behavior using buckled single wall nano tube electrodes and an elastomatic separator. According to Wei, the results were quite satisfying. The group is now working on improving the efficiency of the power source and to make it compatible with industry standards. If everything goes right, pretty soon you might be able to show-off flexible electronic devices!
