What is the minimum intensity of light that a photo diode can detect? and how long can the light be kept for sensing it?

depends on the diode. each diodes detects/admits difference range of frequency. that's why u have red, blue, etc... diodes... of course that diodes will be depends on the materials, doping level... etc...

EEnano is correct but using IR sensor will be good for smaller applications.

just a little bit more information to add on dileep comment if he don't mind.

if you're wondering why IR sensor is good for smaller applications i think you should look at the light spectrum "https://eosweb.larc.nasa.gov/EDDOCS/images/Erb/wavelength_figure.jpg" because the wavelength is much smaller for IR thus it is better for smaller detection. please correct me if i'm wrong😀 so from this you can choose your diode correctly depending on applications

    best wishes

Even an LDR with an LED makes a good combo... Like having those stuff for the automatic water tap... I used laser for some other project... 😀
