  • The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) shall soon be launching a mobile application that lets people apply and pay for their passports via smartphones. Developed by TCS, the new app shall be an upgraded version of mPassport Seva that's available on iOS, Android and Windows Phone. At present, mPassport Seva lets users look up general information, track their nearest passport center and police station, compute the required amount to be paid and track the status of the application. Additional features like filing the application and paying for the same are to be added to it.

Developed by TATA Consultancy Services (TCS), the app is still one and a half months away from hitting the market. Golok Kumar Simli, principal consultant and head (technology), ministry of external affairs, said that though much of the process has been smarted-out, users will still have to carry the hard copies of the required documents to the nearest Passport Seva Kendra (Help Center) after the ARN number is generated and an appointment is fixed. He declined to explain the workings of the passport app citing security concerns.

The app-development team at TCS comprises 30-40 people, who're parallely working in other MEA projects as well. Developing this app is a part of Passport Seva Project, which aims to provide passport services in a quick and transparent manner.

All's that left to be seen is whether this app confronts issues on network and connectivity. More on its technical efficiency can only be stated when the apps gets an official launch. Keep watching this space for more updates.
