OPTIMIZATION OF DESIGN PARAMETERS, ANALYSIS, FABRICATION AND TESTING OF SPLIT PIN CRANKSHAFT

Project Abstract / Summary : The project is an analytical and experimental study on the split pin crankshaft. In this project we are going to perform two experimental programs: Designing, Analysis and Optimization of design parameters of split pin crankshaft; Fabrcation and testing of split pin crankshaft.

the modern automobile engines produced are much advanced than the engines that are used in the vehicles of 18th and 19th century. One of the most important factors for development of the modern engines are the designed parts used in the engine. Among these the crankshaft is of great considerations. the crankshaft were developed various times since the engines came into commercial existence. In this project we are going to perform experiment on the split pin crankshaft both anlytically and practically.

The component viz., split pin crankshaft is a crankshaft which has its crank pin splitted at its axial midpoint perpendicular to the axis of the crank pin, unlike the conventional crankshaft in which the crank pin is present as a whole. Here the crankshaft designed and fabricated is a crankshaft suitable for a V12 engine.

Here we are finding out how feasible the split pin crankshaft can be when the conventional crankshaft gets replaced by the split pin crankshaft in a V12 engine with very few modification in engine.

The split pin crankshaft is first designed with the visual reference of the crankshaft of W-engine and is then redesigned according to the Wolkswagen V12 engine using Solidworks. It is then analysed by using the Ansys Software. the analysis comprises of all the reactions and various physical varations occur in the crankshaft during the analysis testing. Then the given safe designed crankshaft is then optimized for reducing the material size factors like weight, thickness of web etc., without affecting the strength of the component.

The component is then fabricated to its parametric scaled model and practically apply all the loads that are found in the crankshaft in an engine during running conditions. The test conducted are Fatigue test, Stress test and Fast Fourier Transformation(FFT) analysis.

the following results from both analytical and practical experiments are then compared with the conventional V12 engine crankshaft.

Why did you choose to work on this project topic : Here we are finding out how feasible the split pin crankshaft can be when the conventional crankshaft gets replaced by the split pin crankshaft in an engine with very few modification in it. The project is also used to identify whether this crankshaft is advantageous than the conventional one and what are the factors that hinders the usage of the crankshaft

Project Highlights : We as a team has tried to bring a concept of finding the difference between the conventional and split pin crankshaft and also to find out the feasibility to improve the engine performance. as we have tried to show our ideas and talent using this project we hoe our work would give us the success to win this competition
