The lazy bums among us as well as the ones who have to be in bustling places most of the times will surely love this new concept. NTT Docomo has introduced what it calls the Grip UI - a feature for smartphones that will let users access apps, lock the smartphone, play music or open a bookmark just by gripping the phone in different ways. The technology behind this concept is based on the combinations of where, in what order, and how strongly a user grips the phone. Amazing, isn't it? We are sure reminded of the times when the feature of shake to change the currently playing music was introduced. The Grip UI feature would be particularly useful for people who may have to frequently travel in crowded trains, where space and mobility is restricted.
The folks at NTT Docomo had to put touch sensors on the sides of the phone and make sure that the UI responds within milliseconds. In fact, they are trying to make it further user-friendly by making the interface not too sensitive or too slow. It is important that they make it feel just right.

Unless you aren't already worried about what happens if you accidentally drop your smartphone, you will be glad to know that Docomo had plans for the future development of Grip UI in a way that would completely replace the physical buttons. For now, all we know is that Grip UI is just a prototype and the company has no plans of introducing it into smartphones anytime soon. DigInfo has some nice demonstration of the technology behind Grip UI. Have a look -
