Nokia has rolled out the new Lumia Black software update for Lumia range of Windows Phone 8 smartphones. The update is now available for download only for the Lumia 925 and 1020 and the update versions for Nokia Lumia 820 and 920 shall be delivered soon. The Lumia Black update for Lumia 520, 620, 625 and 720 are waiting for approval. The upgrade comprises of new features, apps and app updates and we shall take a closer look at them in the following paragraphs.

We start with the updated version of the Nokia Glance Screen. The existing Nokia Glance Screen that came with the Amber Update was only capable of showing the time but the 2.0 version can show notifications including phone, messages, email, outlook, calendar, and notifications from apps like Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp and games. With this update Bluetooth LE has been enabled on all Lumia smartphones. Lumia phones have gained quite a lot of ground thanks to their imaging capabilities and with this update Nokia has updated the imaging algorithms to reduce noise in photos. The Nokia Storyteller app which was first launched on the Lumia 1520 and 2520 has also been included with the update. Nokia has unified the Nokia Pro Camera and Smart Camera in a single app called as Nokia Camera. The app was available for PureView category of smartphones since last year but it can now be downloaded by other Lumia smartphones as well.

Lumia phones which have got 1GB of RAM and above will be getting Nokia Refocus and Nokia Beamer with the Black Update. The Nokia Refocus app lets you take a photo first and choose what you want in focus later and the Nokia Beamer lets you share photos, documents, presentations to any HTML5-enabled screen. After installing the update users can download the App Folder which helps them organise apps and settings into a folder or tile on the Start Screen. Other minor updates include the ability to close apps in the multitasking view, customised ringtones for every contact and screen rotation lock.
