Japan’s defense ministry had given the contract to Fujitsu Ltd. in 2008 for 178.5 million yen to develop a computer virus which is capable of tracking, identifying and disabling sources of cyber-attacks and is working with it since then. Great damage can be spread across the internet due to this virus which has the ability to disable the attacking program on it’s own and drill to the source of the attack. Servers and Personal Computers connected to the internet all over the world could be disabled by this virus if it is targeted properly. According to the theory, as soon as the security system detects an attack on the network which is protected by it, the virus is released as a defensive measure and then it begins to travel back to the source disabling all the machines along the way. The probability is high that most of the machines getting disabled along the way are personal PCs or corporate machines which have been compromised without the user’s knowledge. International incidents would also pop-up if there’s the issue of the affected machines being in another country.

The damage caused by this virus worsens if the source code is open-sourced for security reviews. Serious worms can then be built by government organizations who don’t think much while spending millions of dollars in electronic warfare applications. Imagine a scenario where a virus is launched which is programmed to seek and disable machines using a particular internet protocol like XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol) which is an open chat standard used by many clients all over the world including Facebook. Facebook has millions of active users at any given time so a great havoc can be created. Latest viruses being released on the internet are always a big concern and a big threat. The debate which rises is if the governments should be spending their money behind researches on a computer virus, defensive or not.
