The Indian Online Railway Reservation System dependent wholly and solely on the IRCTC website is now taking part in what appears to be a stunt of sorts. The news became unsettling for many when, #-Link-Snipped-# shared that it is IRCTC's grand strategy to book 7,200 e-tickets per minute as it targets shortening the gap between the huge demand and meagre supply. In this era, when blogposts titled 'best times to book a ticket on IRCTC' or 'If you love someone, book a tatkal ticket for them' thrive and prosper, this astonishing feat will be something to look forward to. The stats say that currently IRCTC is able to book about 2000 tickets per minute while handling about 1.2 lakh concurrent connections on web servers. So, the question arises - Do we really need to crowd this crowd? All that the site needs right now is a performance upgrade.
Working up to it and planning to invest Rs. 100 crore in empowering the website, IRCTC's Managing Director R K Tandon explained the action plan for capacity enhancement in a presentation to the Railway Minister CP Joshi at a review meeting in the presence of Railway Board Chairman Vinay Mittal and CRIS Managing Director Sunil Kumar. So, they are looking into developing a next-gen (?) software and what we're hoping to be more powerful servers. Eh?
Spilling out more data for us, it is now out there that the upgrading of website is a continuous process because the average bookings per day have increased from 3.67 lakh in 2012 to 4.15 lakh now. They say that 37% of the railway tickets are booked online. But are Indians happy with that numbers? With WiFi and broadband reaching thousands of people, it's time those digits rise up to at least 50%. We all want to get rid of all the frustrating tweets about failed attempts to book tickets online, especially the Tatkal ones at 10 am, right?
It is just good to know that the officials know the feedback that the site receives and is taking actions on improving the site for better results. We all can't wait to see the day when we are able to book the tickets within minutes.
