The Indian Institute Of Hams in association with Indian Institution Of Engineers have joined hands to promote amateur radio (aka Ham radio) in India. The Institute of Hams has began awareness drive on Sunday and is expected to organise a two-day workshop for Ham radio enthusiasts on June 15 &16. The workshop will train interested candidates & allow them to experiment with the Ham radio. The workshop will be conducted at the Instuition Of Engineers, Mysore. The institute director, Mr. S Sathyapal pointed out that the penetration of Internet may allow the ham radio can be used to connect to multiple operators simultaneously.

The Ham radio originated in the late 19th century. However, it only became popular in the beginning of 20th century, with 'First Annual official Wireless Blue Book of The Wireless Association Of America' listed the first Ham radio. Today, there are tens of thousands of Ham radio stations across the world. In India, the Institute Of Hams is promoting the Ham radio.

Sathyapal said that the minimum age limit to get the license from the Uniion Ministry Of Communication & Information Technology (India) is just 12 years. I licensee is eligible to setup his/her own radio station at their residence and can communicate with people anywhere in the world. The Ham radio system has proven to be exceptionally important during natural disasters. If any of the CEans are interested in participating, we'd recommend getting in touch with the Mysore chapter of IIE.
