Image Ads in Gmail?

I noticed something very interesting today in my Gmail inbox (Google Apps mailbox, actually). I was looking at a press release by a company and I stumbled upon something I never saw in Gmail before!

Image advertisement in the Gmail sidebar! Looks like Gmail's going Yahoo's way to display image/flash based advertisements in Gmail. I captured the screenshot in case this is a rare spotting -

    I got an update on this. Gmail recently started experimenting with Image ads in Gmail.
