How much do engineers earn?

If you are a non-engineer reading this site, your brain must've come across this question at least once. If you're thinking of becoming an engineer and everyone tells you that the financial prospects are very bright. Think again and do your research well.
I sometimes read the career queries section in the newspapers as well as on online forums and I see that a lot of people seem to have that question. And there are many wrong notions about it too.
There is stuff like - Could you tell me why do people in the medical field make so much money and not engineers?
Then there are the questions of "starting salaries" and "smart packages" and "per annum v/s per month". It obviously also changes with the country and the discipline you've chosen. Though I've firm beliefs that 'money' should be the last reason why you chose engineering, I think such questions need to be addressed. And where better than an engineering community.

So lets just talk about the major disciplines, Electrical/Electronic, Mechanical, Chemical, and Computers.
I invite all you engineers to share your experiences with the entry-level salaries as well as that for the experienced engineers. Let us see what each one of you has to say.

In general, I believe engineering earns slightly more than most other professions. More specialised jobs would definitely demand salaries. I'm curious to know how the pay packages are decided for those who're purely in the research and development jobs.

I made a quick search online and found that software engineers make more than most other disciplines in engineering.

The pay-packages, however are decided by several factors - including the value of the currency in International markets, economic conditions and even the company that is offering job. It's common to read the news that companies like Facebook and Google picking up engineers in India at unthinkable salary packages.

I would say around US$1500 per month. Can this be a generic figure? Engineers get paid way more, nut that's for those who work for the big conglomerates. I am considering a basic, or standard if you would, number.
There are much more engineers today than there were in the past.
Supply and demand - if supply is scarce prices rise. This is not the case anymore. Engineers were paid more in the past because there were less of them around.

as ce designer said this is a thing of the past. the supply has exceeded the demand, and companies really don't care if engineers drop out from the workplaces, because there are 1000 applicants for each vacancy.

but similarly the competition has gone up even for people of non-engineering careers.
