Stirling engine is a practical application of Stirling cycle. Just like petrol engine is a practical application of Otto cycle.
In Otto cycle also, we have adiabatic compression and expansion processes whereas in real petrol engine the processes are not at all adiabatic. Same is the case with Stirling cycle and Stirling engine. The Stirling engine is based on Stirling cycle and tries to achieve as much as possible the ideal Stirling cycle.
Stirling engine has no particular widespread application. However it has been researched a lot for its application in Solar power generation. -

stirling engine is an engine based on stirling cycle in which heat addition and heat rejection takes place at constant tempratue...u know that a weak point of carnot cycle is that work output in carnot cycle is less because value of mean effective pressure is less so to improve this a cycle named as stirling cycle is developed which remove the problem of less work output of carnot cycle..and gives a greater efficiency near about the efficiency of carnot cycle...external combustion engine can work on stirling cycle...are u staisfied now?and if u have any another query then u can ask...i will solve that...zaveri#-Link-Snipped-#

The Stirling cycle is a closed cycle and it contains, most commonly a fixed mass of gas called the "working fluid" (air, hydrogen or helium). The principle is that of thermal expansion and contraction of this fluid due to a temperature differential.zaveri#-Link-Snipped-#
what is stirling cycle all about ?
The Stirling cycle consists of four thermodynamic distinct processes acting on the working fluid : two constant-temperature processes and two constant-volume processes.

Process 1-2 : Isothermal Compression Process. Work is done on the working fluid while an equal amount of heat is rejected by the system to the cooling source. The working fluid cools and contracts at constant temperature Tc.
Process 2-3: Constant Volume Displacement Process with Heat addition. Heat is absorbed by the working fluid and temperature is raised from Tc to Th. No work is done.
Process 3-1: Isothermal Expansion Process. Work is done by the working fluid, while an equal amount of heat is added to the system from the heating source. The working fluid heats and expands at constant temperature Th.
Process 4-1: Constant Volume Displacement process with Heat Rejection. heat is rejected by the working fluid and temperature decreases from Th to Tc. No work is done. -

Application: sterling engine usually have lower efficiency but they create much lesser noise and vibration than their siblings so they are used in submarines and some spacecrafts.
