Green Engineering is a topic that is trending in almost all fields of society. Engineers can be the pivots in revolutionizing the whole scenario.

While thinking about this topic, I was wondering on how can Computer Engineers contribute towards Green Engineering?

If you have any suggestions or ideas, we can list them here.

Nice topic abrakadabra 😀 I guess we are already creating a green environment as we are working all the way through to eliminate the use of papers right !! everything is computerized now a days so there is no need for paper which saves a lot of trees 😀

@slashfear: Good point. Digital information saves trees. But old computers also contribute to e-waste.
What else can computer engineers do that directly helps saving the environment and making it green?

Reuse is the only method of decreasing e waste in my opinion. If we can recycle the e waste to make new electronic devices and circuits, then it will help environment a lot.

hmmm no need of paper and books for saving data and online money transfers saves the papers for billing purposes
i think this is also same openion of others too
but i have a different idea why cant we use only numbers in money without real money as all are billing are occuring by online whats the need of printing notes so lots of paper can be saved

since we would be sitting in front of computer everytime rather than roaming outside on bikes or cars, and doing stuffs which harms environment, in which we will be contributing towards green engineering.😀

You know, the computer parts which come now-a-days are recyclable... It means, the waste can be used to make something new... 😀 Like the Nokia Recycle scheme... Put your old phone and get some reward! 😀

Technology has advanced a step further its not about delievering service but how efficiently you provide considering enviromental aspects , for instance the batteries in laptops are advanced than in previous days which can provide more backup and are recyclable , there are some software programs which helps to manage the power ( when applied in big organisation helps in great way to be energy efficient ) and basically the recyling value of the product as my friend pointed out in above answer is a real game changer , these are some key field which when combined really helps to be really ecofriendly to surrounding.

not all computer parts are recyclable. And neither does everyone drop their old phones in the recycle bins. Most of the old computer stuff goes into trash anyways. And there is no proper recycling system/arrangement in our country. Everything just goes into the dump sites/garbage fills.

There is no definite way of contributing towards a greener environment on the hardware front. Though initiatives like recycling(as mentioned above), use of standard reusable components could be encouraged. People should start using HighSpeed PC ~ Home of the Tech Station, the original open-air PC case! since 1999(and they should become cheaper too for faster adoption) instead of their traditional cabinets. These can be used for years and years and almost all types of hardware components can fit in without the need to upgrade to newer ones to fit new hardware additions.

Internet cafes and organizations having multiple pcs installed at their place can switch to thin client systems. Even a simple core 2 duo system can run 4-5 other systems without any problem. Thus it saves on capital costs incurred on hardware and software procurement as well as saves on electricity bill(and adds to lower carbon footprint 😀 )

The best bet would be to turn everything mechanical into computerised systems. Computers can help save trees(as mentioned above), do work faster and more efficiently (saving more on resources directly or indirectly).
