Hitachi Corporation, has developed a prototype boarding gate to be installed at the airport to scan passengers and detect the explosives inside portable devices and IC cards. Hitachi says that the boarding gate is capable of scanning 1200 passengers per hour. The scanner has been developed in associated with Nippon Signal Co. Ltd. and the University of Yamanashi in order to increase people's safety at public places. The boarding gate collects the tiny particles on the surface of the IC cards or portable devices. It takes approximately 1-2 seconds to scan and make a decision. The research has been supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science & Technology (MEXT).

Hitachi's engineers believe that the flight safety would be significantly increased if they can install the last-minute security checks at the time when passengers board the aircraft. By improving the efficiency of their scanners it'll now be possible to check every passenger without disrupting the queue.
The boarding gate uses mass spectrometry technology which can scan the boarding passes inside IC cards or portable gadgets and detect explosive compounds. In case you're attending the Special Equipment Exhibition & Conference for Anti-Terrorism (SEECAT' 12) on 17-19 October in Tokyo, you can check out this machine on display.
