Google Translate App for Android got a major update today. This new version 2.5 brings for a feature that lets you take a picture from your smartphone's rear camera and then swipe your finger over the words you need translated to highlight them and lo! You get the text translation right on your screen. This feature is only available for Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) or higher versions. Last month, we saw the popular #-Link-Snipped-# that does the same function, coming to Android. We are already thinking of using it to translate the road-side signs and hoardings while in transit.

Other than this major feature update, we the app now has the ability to select preferred dialects for speech input as well as instant translation. Foreigners in Japan would be glad to know that the app now handles Japanese characters in a better way - recognizes multiple characters at once. You can download the app right away from the Google Play link in the source.
