Google Cardboard VR SDK Is Here - Turn Your Smartphone Into A VR Machine
Google introduced its Cardboard VR headsets at I/O conference earlier in June. Just a folded cardboard with lens but capability of turning a smartphone into Virtual Reality machine has been quite a success as Google has already shipped over 500,000 units of Google Cardboard. Now Google overcame the only limitation of apps for VR by unveiling the SDK for Android and Unity. In competition to Google Cardboard is Oculus VR owned by Facebook with other players like Sony, Panasonic and Samsung are expected to join the club soon. Google is clearly aiming to capture the new segment market by every possible take.
Getting straight to the problems faced by developers, Google presented the cardboard SDK for Android and Unity. Using the SDK would solve the most common issues in the development of apps for cardboard. Though there are already a dozen of apps available, the company really want to have a variety of them for the all-new user experience. Majority of the available apps are free, so users can just download them and get the cardboard experience with Android.
Google has already made the cardboard specification open source. The search-giant also released the guidelines with updated specifications for cardboard manufacturers. The makers can have their custom viewer but Google wants to have unique optical layout. According to the #-Link-Snipped-#, the company would add more tools like viewer calibration tool to SDK so that every app could manage accordingly.
