Golf Balls Inspire The Design Of Nike’s TurboSpeed Tracksuit!

Nike's #-Link-Snipped-# light-weight tracksuit is intended to aid sprinters in getting that extra edge. The suit has got many golf-ball like holes all over it, expected to boost the runner's speed. On a 100-meter dash this could improve the time taken by as much as 0.023 seconds.

Golf Balldoes give us the know-how of this process - First, the dimples on the surface of a golf ball cause the boundary layer on the upstream side of the ball to transition from laminar to turbulent. The turbulent boundary layer is able to remain attached to the surface of the ball much longer than a laminar boundary and so creates a narrower, low pressure, wake and hence less pressure drag. The reduction in pressure drag causes the ball to travel farther.

Nike designed this suit after going through hours of wind tunnel tests, making sure that the aerodynamic dimples did lessen the drag on the athlete’s shoulders, arms, and calves. A low-pressure turbulence created at the boundary layer on the wind-facing side of the ball help increase the speed. Usain Bolt's record of 9.58 seconds shall surely be challenged, or better, even broken. What do you think?
