GM To Launch Diesel Chevrolet Cruze in 2013

General Motors Co., the automaker, confirmed that it will trade a diesel version of its in-demand Chevrolet Cruze in North America in 2013. This will be Chevy's first diesel passenger car proposed in the United States since the 1980s, when the brand had proposed a diesel on its small car Chevette. As of now, Chevy sells a Cruze diesel in Europe and other parts of the world. The diesel version will lend up to another fuel-efficient option to the Cruze family now traded in the U.S. market. For years, many automakers have been unwilling to sell a diesel car in the United States because they usually cost more and companies dreaded demand wouldn't materialize.

The diesel-powered Cruze will go neck-and-neck with the Volkswagen Jetta TDI, which comes for $22,995. GM will declare pricing and product details at a later date. The Cruze Eco, which went on sale last fall, is the most prominent gas-mileage version of GM's latest compact. It gets an Environmental Protection Agency-approximated 42 mpg in highway driving, 28 mpg city and 33 mpg combined. The diesel version is anticipated to beat those numbers, delivering 50 mpg, according to a July 11 Associated Press report, quoting unnamed sources.

At that rating, the Cruze diesel would match the fuel efficiency of some popular hybrid electric cars on the market today, including the Toyota Prius. GM is awaited to build the diesel Cruze at its plant in Lordstown, Ohio, alongside the gas engine models. GM has said the 4,500-worker plant, which is already fumctioning on three shifts, will be the only source of Cruze production for the North American market. The Cruze, whose base model begins at $16,525, traded 25,000 vehicles in June, beating the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord to become America's top-selling car.
