A German engineering firm "TimberTower" has erected world's first wooden wind turbine at Hanover, Germany. The tower of this turbine is 100 meter tall and is capable of producing 1500 kW of electricity, just enough to power about 1000 households. This 'TimberTower' is a milestone  on the way to green energy production - because it's been constructed from 99% renewable materials.

The onshore steel masts can reach only to the height of 110 meters because a mast so tall has to be a 4.2 meters in diameter and that's the maximum size that can comfortably pass through the road bridges in Germany. However, a wooden mast is constructed at the site and the size restrictions do not apply.

The TimberTower is manufactured as a linked system of timber panels (laminated) assembled at the construction site. The tower is currently being tested. It's expected to be connected to the grid by end of the year. The engineering firm guarantees life-span of 20 years.
