FPGA BASED FIRST FAULT IDENTIFICATION AND REPORTING SYSTEM

Project Abstract / Summary : Industrial fault identification systems have existed for many years, but there are many inherent problems or limitations of the existing systems. For example the existing systems inform of a fault after the fault has happened and only inform that a fault has happened. There is no information about the cause of the fault or damage. Hence the information provided by the conventional systems is useless. Also with complex industrial machines and process, when one fault happens it can lead to a series of other faults one after the other. Conventional fault monitoring systems only inform that a fault has happened or that many faults have occurred, but they don’t provide information about which fault happened first and which fault happened as a result of the first fault. In this project we propose a FPGA based device that can simultaneously track the status of multiple inputs and check if any of the parameters is going out of range of the acceptable limits. If any of the parameter is going out of limit, then the system starts to make recording of the exact time and the specific parameter that went out of limits. If any subsequent parameter goes out of range, then the same is also recorded. Automatically, the machines will shut down when the value goes out of the limit. The FPGA hardware is then interface to the USB port of the computer. On the computer a simple display interface can be designed that gives information about the faults and the time of the occurrence of the faults.

Why did you choose to work on this project topic : This paper addresses the issues of realizing through FPGA the performance of the more number of machines can be improved. The damage cost will be avoided . In this system very fast identification and reporting system is proposed. A single FPGA is used to monitor and control the parameters of the machine . Hence this system is more reliable , efficient and time consuming. This system can be used to production industry , electronic industry , home appliances , school and college laboratory.

Project Highlights : The FPGA-based fault identification technique will support several properties as listed below:1)FPGA is used many number of parameters can be used. 2) More controllability and observability, 3) Fault identification & reporting system with high speed, 4)more reliable ,efficient and time consuming 5) successive fault will be recorded 6)monitor the parameter values in PC using visual software.7)Automatically , the machines will shutdown when the value goes out of the limit.
This paper supports all of the seventh properties as mentioned above and is based on Verilog description of the systems.
