Ford Designs World's First Digital Child!

Since early automobile days #-Link-Snipped-# has developed many models for virtual crash testing. These models were developed to understand the impact of crash forces in cases of accident. Down the line, we have been successful in bringing many safety measures by studying the impact forces. However the incidents of injury nevertheless occur. #-Link-Snipped-# have developed the world's first digital child to redesign the cars for preventing crash injury prone young occupants.

The thought of improving the 'restraint system' emerged from the fact that more casualties are suffered by young passengers. The total number injury /casualty cases reported were high in the younger age group. #-Link-Snipped-#, senior technical leader for safety, Ford Research and Advanced Engineering believes that this is because the body of young occupants is a bit different from the adults. Hence to make the safety arrangements in modern automobile more effective, a digital model was developed by the scientists keeping in view the age group of 4 to 34 years after decade long efforts.

The group led by Dr. Rouhana have prepared almost similar model mimicking the young human body. The team has geometrically designed the model to measure the amount of impact that a human body suffers. The efforts are laudable as a model to understand the consequences by lower age passengers was unavailable until now.

Ford Motor Co. has earlier developed human models on the similar lines keeping in mind a generalized age groups or adults. This is evident from the Sierra Sam which ford designed in 1949 and soon after the FERD I and II in the mid 1950s. The company uses a current model called Hybrid III and other dummies christened WorldSID and EuroSID. The company has always promoted #-Link-Snipped-#. The present innovation aims at improved crash testing studies while designing a car's interior and exterior. The development of world's first digital child for crash testing has added a new era in automobile ergonomics.
