DARPA’s Thinking Camera To Be A Reality Soon

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) at Pentagon is all set to bring their dream of a thinking camera to reality. DARPA’s Mind’s Eye program which was launched last year is all set to make a thinking camera. This camera will be able to judge the outcome of a particular action and will decide what next is to be done. The Mind’s Eye program by DARPA aims at building visual intelligence for unmanned systems. Once the technology comes into existence and is a success then it can be applied in a variety of fields including the ground surveillance job done by Army scouts and Marine Corps Force Reconnaissance troops in military operations.

DARPA in their Industry Day Announcement release acknowledged everyone about DARPA MIND’S EYE PROGRAM. The release states:

Humans in particular perform a wide range of visual tasks with ease, which no current artificial intelligence can do in a robust way. Humans have inherently strong spatial judgment and are able to learn new spatiotemporal concepts directly from the visual experience. Humans can visualize scenes and objects, as well as the actions involving those objects. Humans possess a powerful ability to manipulate those imagined scenes mentally to solve problems. A machine based implementation of such abilities would be broadly applicable to a wide range of applications.

DARPA’s Mind Eye program aims at developing artificial intelligence in machines. Visual intelligence which helps man or animals to instantly figure out the next move or action of any object/person, while watching them is now intended to be developed in machines. “The focus of Mind’s Eye is to add the perceptual and cognitive underpinnings for recognizing and reasoning about the verbs in those scenes, enabling a more complete narrative of action in the visual experience.” This Mind’s Eye will focus on the actions rather than only on the number of people or objects present in the scene and hence, prove to be smarter. The thinking camera which is the outcome of this technology will prove beneficial in military surveillance in areas of danger where it can observe the activities and report the observations with the help of sufficient visual intelligence.

This thinking camera can find application in a lot of places which require continuous surveillance like in home security systems and unmanned vehicles. The number of security guards will come down noticeably with this invention coming into practice. The present intelligent vehicles which drive themselves (i.e. they don’t need a driver) can become even more intelligent with this Thinking camera.
