Earthquake activities occurs everyday all around this world. Because of the fast growing number of buildings..high rise buildings or skyscrapers, it is necessary that these structure will ensure safety or protection among the people.
One of the method in protecting people against the collapsing of building especially during earthquake is by using dampers.

yup dampers are the most used aseismic design technology.

    i've mentioned about a few dampers here:#-Link-Snipped-#

Taipei 101 is a skyscraper which uses damper specifically TUNED MASS DAMPER. The tuned mass damper is located inside the Taipei 101 that is suspended from level 92 to level 87. This damper weights 660 metric tons and has a diameter of 5.5 meters. This damper acts like a giant pendulum wherein during earthquake it counteracts the building’s movement. It reduces the sway of the building from 30-40% when it is hit by strong winds or earthquake.

Friction dampers are designed not to slip during wind. During an earthquake, they slip prior to yielding of structural members. They consist of series of series of steel plates specially treated in order to develop most reliable friction.

Dampers are not only used as earthquake resistant but also used as fire resistant.

Fire Damper- it is a damper designed to stop the spread of fire through floors, walls and partitions. The device usually set to close at a temperature of 165 deg.F (73.89deg.C).

There are two main types of fire dampers
    1. Dynamic dampers -fire dampers that simply closes once an alarm, such as a fire alarm is set off.

2.Standard fire dampers-fire dampers that stay open even after an alarm such as a fire alarm is set off and will only close based on temperature.

Zone dampers - are dampers that control one zone...like a room, floor or section of a building. They are part of full air-handler systems like those seen on the roofs of most multistory buildings. They are are also automatic dampers, which means that they open and close to impede or allow air flow on their own. These dampers are not very expensive, don't consume a whole lot of energy and are simple systems that are easy to maintain.

hi, since you were explaining the dampers which is related to seismic analysis. can you explain the what is p-delta analysis? i recently designing a 8-storey building and using staad, i was wondering in the software there is an option of p-delta analysis.can you please explain what is exactly the explanation or the results when i perform this type of analysis.

    what is a viscous damper???
Viscous Damper uses viscous medium to damp the motion occuring.
